Evaluating an ERP Package - Standards and Documentation
Continuing my discussion on evaluating an ERP package, today I am concentrating more on the documentation available for the ERP to be selected. Normally, documentation is available online or in PDF format on CD's. I have listed down some questions to ask relating to documentation while selecting an ERP.
1. Does the ERP solution provide documentation on the system's functionality, technical design, and operating environment?
2. Does the ERP under consideration provide the capability to automatically change the relevant documentation when making modifications in the system, such as to tables, fields, screen formats, and report layouts?
3. How good is the user documentation in representations of menus, screens, and so on?
4. Does the ERP provide for easy maintainence of the system as well as the corresponding documentation?
5. Does the ERP provide for cross referencing functionalites?
6. In what format is the documentation available? Online or PDF?
I strongly recommend that before selecting an ERP take a hard look at each of the questions above. Good documentation can go a long way is ensuring success of an ERP implementation.
