Defining Descriptive Flexfields in Oracle

Defining Descriptive Flexfields in Oracle

Almost 4-5 months back I had touched upon the concept of flexfields in Oracle. Today, I would like to explain a little on how to define descriptive flexfields in Oracle. The discussion may get a little technical, but thats the best way to get my point through. In the first place, there are three pre-requisities for defining flexfields.

1. defining the segments
2. defining the descriptive information
3. Defining the value set information for each segment

Once all of the above are in place, once can then choose the size of the of flexfield window, number and order of segments, segment descriptions, order of segments etc. Once all changes to a flexfield are complete, a user needs to save such changes. Oracle applications automatically compiles the flexfields. My advise is plan the flexfield structures carefully, define descriptive flexfields in any way you want, but make sure that there are no changes in data structures after data entry, cause this leads to inconsistencies in data and may also affect the performance of oracle applications.
