SAP R3 System Landscape - Setting Up The System Landscape

System Landscape refers to the IT data environments supporting the ERP system. In SAP, it is important segregate development, quality assurance and production environments. A two system landscape of development and production environments is not optimal since actual development of ABAPs and quality assurance occurs in the same environment. Setting the system landscape for SAP R3 can turn out be crucial for data security i.e protecting application data based on different clients. Following are some key reasons to have seperate environments for development, quality assurance and production.

1. In case there is a loss of data, client data can be built only if test data and customizing data are held in different environments.

2. It would be very difficult to make changes to repository objects in case of there are no test and development environments for trying out changes.

3. When development and test instances are seperate from production, the performance and quality of the production instance does not get affected.

4. Changes and new ABAPs can easily be tested in the test and development instances before being rolled out in the production environment.
