SAP Subledger Vs SAP General Ledger Relationships

SAP Subledger Vs SAP General Ledger Relationships

I have recently talked about reconciling GL account postings in SAP here. In SAP accounting, entries made in the subledger are posted to the general ledger accounts. Entries may flow in the SAP FI general ledger as a result of a transaction assigned to a general ledger account, a posting transaction in a subsidiary ledger or as a result of an operational transaction in an application module. Whatever be the case, it is important to understand the relationship between SAP subledgers and SAP general ledger. Certain key points are mentioned below.

1. Master data is common for both GL and subledger. Infact master data parameters are shared by the GL and subledger.
2. Chart of accounts used is also shared between SL and GL.
3. Any transaction data in SAP does not distinguish between subledger and general ledger. This means that transaction data is shared between the two.
4. And finally, SAP reporting utilizes both data from SAP subsidiary ledgers as well as from SAP general ledger.
