Oracle Applications Security Audit - Understanding the Environment

In any audit of an ERP, it is of utmost importance for the IT auditor to understand the IT environment. In the initial stages of the Oracle audit, one needs to gather background information about the company's business what are the main business cycles, order to cash, procure to pay, manufacture etc. For the benefit of readers, I have included a checklist, questions to gain an understanding of the Oracle IT environment.

1. First and foremost, the auditor should ask for the version and release of the Oracle Applications software which the client has implemented.

2. Next, it would be useful to ask questions like the total number of company codes, number of oracle application instances and total number of named users for Oracle apps.

3. The various modules which a company has implemented should also like finance, manufacturing, supply chain management, can also help giving the amount of work that needs to be done.

4. Finally, it is important to ask whether the client has gone in for customization. In most case clients do have some sort of customization, some interface with legacy which needs to be understood to audit oracle applications throughly.
