SAP BW Data Staging Basics Tutorial

Data staging is an important step in the process of SAP BW implementation, Data staging means essentially holding data before it is transmitted to the target system. Many readers have requested an introduction to the concept of business warehouse data staging. In most cases of SAP BW implementation, data is extracted from many non-SAP systems into SAP business warehouse. SAP BW can have various bw data staging scenarios. These might include open hub service, DB connect, Flat file connection via OS, XML Integration and so on. The BW staging architecture comprises of infosources i.e. a provider structure. This represents all data from legacy systems which needs to be transmitted. This whole data is offered together in one infosource. Having an infosoruce makes it easier to manage the entire set of data in a single point using an infosource.

As a next step, data staging requires transfer structure which defines how data will come from the source system. It my be possible for different source systems to have different transfer structures. Before data can be sent to the infocube or the infoobject, all the transfer structures need to be combined into a single communication structure. The update rules ensure that the data is transferred to the infocubes / infoobjects through the communication structure. The infosources thus can update one or multiple infoobject/cubes.
